Project Overview and Role:

The USAID-funded Feed the Future Malawi Agriculture Diversification Activity (AgDiv) is a six-year initiative to sustainably increase income among Malawi’s smallholder farmers by building robust market linkages and improved agricultural productivity. The key activity focus areas include integrating smallholders into commercial markets; unlocking agriculture financing and stimulating private investment; helping farm communities adapt to climate change; improving household nutrition and dietary diversity; and enhancing women and youth empowerment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Under its efforts to engage private stakeholders in Malawi’s agriculture sector and the expansion of innovative irrigation and agricultural technologies, AgDiv is looking to deepen its understanding of the horticulture value chain. To help with this effort AgDiv will engage a consultant to identify key actors and constraints and highlight potential areas of further research or programing. The focus will be on researching current horticulture producers selling into Malawi’s main urban centers or export markets.

The consultant will work closely with AgDiv’s Director of Strategic Partnerships to develop tools and methods throughout the work.

Below is an overview of the expected work to be done by the consultant:

Activity 1: Identification of horticulture producers and key stakeholders

The scoping study should identify existing horticulture producers. Following identification, a profile for each producer should be compiled highlighting location, size of operations, type of equipment used, key crops, and current markets.

Following the compilation of profiles for all producers analysis should be done to categorize producers into various types; for example low, mid, and high capacity. The development of this category system will be a key early deliverable for the activity. The category system should take into account agronomic capability, size and technologies used, and ability to supply different types of markets.

While identifying producers key stakeholders in the public and private sector should be identified including input suppliers, researchers, equipment suppliers, and market facilitators.

Activity Deliverable / Requirement
1 Development of Assessment Rubric Rubric with detailed methodology
1 Producer and stakeholder identification List of all identified producers with requested information
