Position : FtF Malawi AgDiv Gender Associate

 Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 


Background: The Feed the Future Ag Diversification Activity is a seven-year project that contributes to USAID/ Malawi’s Feed the Future goal of sustainably reducing poverty and stunting in eight districts of central and southern Malawi. The activity fosters inclusive and sustainable growth of Malawi’s agricultural sector. The activity seeks to improve the nutritional status of women and children under five through a proven nutrition sensitive approach of layering agriculture and nutrition behavior change interventions in rural communities, while increasing the competitiveness of high value, nutrient-rich value chains through support for agricultural enterprises and increased access to markets and finance.

Objectives: The Gender Associate will be responsible for the coordination of gender activities across various project outcomes. Together, the team will ensure the mainstreaming of the project’s gender strategy and address any gender gaps, gain deeper understanding of the gender dimensions of the challenges confronting women empowerment and equality, and help improve development outcomes. The Gender Associate in liaison with the M&E team will be responsible for monitoring Ag Div’s gender data, analyzing female and male participation and roles, and help the outcome leads to understand what activities including savings and investment activities are taking place and how distributions are used.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and oversight on gender programming to implementing partners and ensure gender mainstreaming and empowerment opportunities are embedded across targeted districts and components.
  • Develop initiatives that improve women’s access to financial services.
  • Develop initiatives that enhance access to markets for women producer groups and women led agro processors.
  • Develop initiatives that improve agricultural productivity for women producer groups using improved agricultural technologies and practices.
  • Develop initiatives that assist women entrepreneurs and NGO’s to advocate for effective economic empowerment programs.
  • Devise strategies for enhancing women’s participation in leadership roles (in Care Groups, VSLAs, and farmer organizations among others), and household decision-making power for women.
  • Collaborate closely with Monitoring and Evaluation team to monitor changing gender dynamics through data collection, reporting, and adapting of program activities.
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of sex-disaggregated data, and with the continuous learning and adaptive management process to ensure that women benefit from the AgDiv Activity through participation in all program components (from value chain development, marketing, to savings/credit, to utilization of nutritious foods).
  • Maintain active relationships with partner organizations, women’s and youth groups, as well as grantees.
  • Conduct training and technical capacity building/awareness building for staff and partners. Participate actively in work planning and review sessions.
  • Prepare expense reports for finance by collecting receipts for expenses.
  • Draft monthly and quarterly detailed program activity implementation plans (linked to budget) and ensure timely reporting. Assist with additional assignments in accordance with the needs of the project.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Gender, Community Development, Agriculture extension, Humanities or any related field with knowledge of the gender issues.
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in promoting, supporting, and facilitating gender equitable approaches to improving access to finance for increased agriculture production;  Experience in working with an international
  • Organization on gender related activities is preferred.
  • Strong teamwork skills, including the ability to liaise, coordinate and communicate with partners
  • Experience with active adult training techniques and methodologies with an emphasis on techniques for rural adults and those with low literacy levels
  • Desired Skills, Competences and Knowledge:
  • Oral and written fluency in English and Chichewa required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint) required
  • Must be well organized and capable of multi-tasking and meeting deadlines
  • Willingness to travel in-country and to the rural areas of the project’s zone of influence
  • Good attention to detail and strong time management skills
  • Familiarity with the political, social, and cultural context of Malawi and how they impact on gender related a
